Q. What does the North American Bird Reference Book computer program actually consist of?
A. The North American Bird Reference Book is a CD-ROM multimedia computer program that has species accounts for 922 North American birds, including songs, photographs, and maps. It retails for $64.95. An optional bird listing (Life List) utility (called LANIUS Excalibur) contains the names of all the birds known to exist in the world. LANIUS Excalibur may be purchased for an additional $75.00 to operate in conjunction with the North American Bird Reference Book.
The names and sequence of the birds in the multimedia application and in the bird listing untilty are based on the book written by James Clements (called Birds of the World, 5th edition).
Q. Can the North American Bird Reference Book run on a Macintosh computer?
A. The North American Bird Reference Book is only designed for computers running the Windows operating system (Windows 95 and higher). Although an Apple/Macintosh version of the software is not available, PowerMac users running PC emulation software (such as Virtual PC) will be able to install and use the North American Bird Reference Book.
Q. Whenever I insert the CD-ROM the Installation screen appears. How do I start the program?
A. Please note that each time you insert the CD-ROM for version 4.0 or 5.0 of the software, the installation menu will appear since the disk is autoplay-enabled. If you have already installed the software, simply click the Exit button. To start the program, simply Press the Start Menu, click on Programs, and select LANIUS Software, then choose the option for Reference Book 4.0 or Reference Book 5.0, depending on the version that you have. The Main Menu screen for the program will now appear. To permamently avoid having the installation screen appear each time you insert the CD-ROM, consider copying all of your multimedia files to your hard disk, as explained in the user's manual. Doing this will eliminate the need to use the CD-ROM when running the North American Bird Reference Book program.

The Wildlife Professional 2011

For some 26 years, Robinson worked as a biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and then the U.S. Forest Service, carving out some ‘spare time’ in 1994 to launch LANIUS Software, to sell his books and software he coded. He changed the name to On My Mountain in 2003, when he began to offer birding and wildlife-watching tours. During all these years, he’s often heard variations of, “I’ve never seen a black birdwatcher before.” Hoping to change that experience, Robinson took early retirement in 2005 to devote himself to his mission of expanding the pool of minorities who enjoy nature, wildlife, and wild places. How does he hope to do this? By encouraging children to go outside to observe, study, and enjoy birds.
