| INSTALLATION OF THE NORTH AMERICAN BIRD REFERENCE BOOK
To install the Reference Book, insert the CD-ROM into the appropriate drive on your Windows/PC computer, then complete the steps outlined below.
- The CD-ROM is AutoPlay-enabled. As a result, the Setup program should launch automatically within 60 seconds.
- The Setup screen will welcome you to the North American Bird Reference Book Installation Browser. Click the Install button to access the installation menu.
- Click the "North American Bird Reference Book" button to install the multimedia bird software program. Follow all instructions on the screen, then press Finish (Note: do not check the box to "launch the Reference Book now" if you need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader; see below).
- If you do not yet have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, return to the installation menu and click the "Adobe Acrobat Reader" button to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader software. You will use this software to open and read the user's manual that comes with the North American Bird Reference Book.
- Click the Main Menu to return to the Installation Browser’s Main Menu; then click on the Exit button.
- To install the free program update to Version 5.2, close ALL applications. Then press the Start menu, click on Run... and enter: X:\V52\Xk52lite.exe where "X" is the drive letter of your CD drive. At the following prompt, press the Finish button.
- You may need to restart your computer after the installation is completed.
Note: the "Installation Screen" will appear whenever you insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive; if you have already installed the software, simply EXIT out of that screen and follow the instructions below for starting the software.
USING THE NORTH AMERICAN BIRD REFERENCE BOOK
To start the Reference Book, simply click on the Reference Book 5.0 icon on your desktop. Alternatively, you could press the Start menu and navigate to the folder where the program was installed; use your mouse to click on Reference Book 5.0 or Reference Book 4.0, depending on the version you have.
- To use the North American Bird Reference Book, at the Main Menu screen click on the HELP pull-down menu and select Print Out Written Documentation ..., then click on Print User's Manual.
- The user's manual will automatically be opened by Adobe Acrobat Reader. To view and print the manual (we recommend printing the first 20 pages to start out with), click on the Adobe Acrobat icon on your Windows task bar
- NOTE: the very first time you use Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer, you may be asked to accept terms of condition and use of the Adobe software. The screen prompting you to do this may be hidden by the North American Bird Reference Book application. To accept terms of use for Adobe Acrobat Reader, simply minimize the Reference Book application and press the "Accept" button to accept the Adobe software license agreement. You will now be able to access the Adobe Acrobat icon on your Windows task bar.
- Take the Tutorial, beginning on about page 5 of the User's Manual, to learn the most about the software in the shortest amount of time.
- Review the User's Manual and begin using the software on a daily basis -- you will find LANIUS Software's North American Bird Reference Book to be a limitless source of knowledge and entertainment involving birds!
- To access Help anywhere in the Reference Book application, simply press [F1].
- Remember that in order to use the multimedia aspects (i.e., bird pictures, songs, and maps) of the Reference Book, your CD-ROM disk must be inserted in the CD-ROM drive of your computer before you attempt to play songs or view maps and photographs within the Reference Book.
